Today Is International Women in Engineering Day!

International Women in Engineering Day is an international awareness campaign celebrated annually on June 23. INWED is intended to elevate the presence of women in engineering and bring more attention to the many career opportunities available to girls in a fast-moving, exciting industry.

Today, we celebrate the many exceptional accomplishments of female engineers around the world. Each year, this campaign has a theme. In 2018, the theme is “Raising the Bar.”

Celebrating the Growth of the Female STEM Workforce

Let’s take a moment to recognize the increase in women throughout the STEM workforce.

  • The improvement may be slow, but it’s there. Business Insider reported that 18% of software engineering jobs went to women in 2016 versus 16% in 2008, and that number continues to grow.
  • Since 1990, female workers in the life sciences have increased, (up from 34% to 47%) bringing them roughly on par with their share in the total workforce (47%), a milestone reached in math occupations (46%) as well (PEW Research Center).
  • While strides are being made, women remain the minority in STEM, and the best way to change that is to encourage younger generations of girls to pursue careers in engineering, as well as shifting the workplace in order to be welcoming to women.

Recognizing the Women at Extreme Networks

At Extreme Networks, it’s of the utmost importance to recognize and promote our female engineers worldwide – something we will do more of in the coming months as part of a broader commitment to supporting, developing, and retaining female leaders. The Extreme talent pool is incredibly diverse, and the work being done is outstanding. It’s important we endorse the women of Extreme at every level, and International Women in Engineering Day is a great opportunity to do just that.
